A Star Quantum Inc., a portfolio company of Abies Ventures, has agreed with Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. to begin development of an application for optimizing flight maintenance plans using optimization calculations based on quantum computing technology, the first of its kind in the Japanese airline industry.

Aircraft maintenance plans are formulated by taking into account a vast number of constraints, and conventional methods require a great deal of labor, making it impractical for conventional computers to create plans that meet the constraints in a short time. To solve this problem, both companies have been conducting demonstration experiments since January 2021, applying A Star Quantum’s quantum computing technology and mathematical optimization, and the prospect of practical application has led to this development decision.

With this application, it will be possible to digitize the expertise of experienced employees and formulate optimal plans automatically in a short period of time, which is expected to create new value such as improved quality.
